School Security Consulting Services
SMSI Inc. is partnered with the South Central Service Cooperative (SCSC) of Mankato, Minnesota, to offer holistic solutions to school security and loss prevention challenges. SCSC presently provides a wide range of support services to school districts. That experience positions them to understand, from the inside the needs and capabilities of school districts to effectively meet the challenges of today's realities. SMSI Inc., on the other hand, is a security consulting firm that has been addressing a wide range of security challenges for more than 15 years. SMSI is interested in developing programs to counter the prevalence of school violance that has plagued our nation.
In almost every case of school violence that periodically dominates the national media we find significant deficiencies and inadequate protocols for the prevention of these episodes. Early warnings are either not seen or consciously ignored. Proactive prevention measures are often nonexistent. As a result, our children and education professionals often become the victims of school violence. And the money that should be going towards educating our children is lost on costly lawsuits.
William H. Nesbitt, CPP, the President of SMSI Inc., is a seasoned security professional with more that 30 years of diverse experience. He has been retained as a Security Expert Witness in more than 325 lawsuits, including school district cases. His practice focuses on the analysis and identification of security vulnerabilities and the subsequent mitigation of those risks.
Lester Martisko, Ph. D., Psychologist and Executive Director of SCSC, has been providing his expertise to public education for more than 30 years. He understands that complex problems require multidimensional solutions. He also understands the public education culture and the need to protect students and faculty with age appropriate solutions.
In addition to security analysis, we believe, there must be symbiosis between behavior modification techniques and the wide range of potential security remedies. Security incidents that erupt in middle school or high school often have their etiology in K through 6. Early intervention results in prevention. Behavioral techniques such as teacher training and peer intervention must be integrated, when appropriate, with more traditional security methodologies as well as coordination with local law enforcement.
SCSC and SMSI Inc., are offering a wide range of services, all aimed at making our schools safer and more conducive to learning. Those services include district wide security assessments, including crimecast analysis. That assessment will result in a plan that will be appropriate to meet the unique needs of each district. One size does not fit all when it comes to school security. Security is a very situation-sensitive discipline. Some school districts may require minimal security fixes such as teacher security training and the development of various peer intervention techniques. Some districts may require the added use of security technology such as CCTV and access control systems. All districts generally require sophisticated security incident tracking and security trend analysis.
Aside from the tragedy caused by school related violence, the cost of prevention is three to four times less than the cost of reacting to a major security breach. There are significant benefits arising from this partnering between SCSC and SMSI. The public school systems have significantly lagged behind the private sector when it comes to effective prevention of violence and the development of cost effective security programs. SMSI and SCSC will close the gap. SCSC will ensure that the special sensitivities and milieu of the public schools are maintained while at the same time providing a safe environment for our children.
